About registering a host

You can register hosts to be managed by Device Manager so that the volumes of the storage system
can be used in the host (application).

You can consolidate paths between storages and hosts, or find out the usage status of storage resources
from the hosts' point of view (such as outputting reports for charging each server that meets its actual
capacity).

The following hosts can be registered for P9000 Command View AE Suite:

Normal hosts (An open host that is not virtualized.)

Virtualization servers (A physical server where virtual software is installed.)

Virtual machines (A machine that is created on the virtualization server and operates on virtualiz-
ation software.)

Depending on the user's purpose, multiple choices of methods (such as manual registration, or using
Host Data Collector, or Device Manager agent) are provided for registering the host. For host
prerequisites and environment settings, see HP P9000 Command View Advanced Edition Suite
Software Administrator Guide
.

If you want to register multiple hosts in a batch, register multiple hosts by specifying the IP address
(range specification and listing addresses are available), and the authentication information of
the host on the network. The host’s WWN name information will automatically be obtained. Host
Data Collector setup is required.

If you want to register hosts individually based on WWN name information, register hosts indi-
vidually by manually specifying the host name, OS type, and WWN name. The hosts can be re-
gistered without setting up Host Data Collector or Device Manager agent.

If an environment where the volumes are allocated to a host is already configured by Remote Web
Console and you want to replace it with Device Manager agent, the Host Scan functionality obtains
the WWN name information from the storage system, and automatically registers the host. The
name of the host group target will be assigned to the host name.

If you want to know the usage status of storage resources for the virtualization servers, or the
correspondence with the virtual machines and you want to register both the virtualization server
and the virtual machine, the virtualization server must use NPIV HBA, and be connected with Fibre
Channel. The virtualization server performs discovery by specifying the CIMOM interface inform-
ation of vMA. For virtual machines, install Device Manager agent or specify the IP address (range
specification and listing addresses are available), and the authentication information of the host
on the network. Note that if the virtualization server is not using NPIV HBA, either a virtualization
server or a virtual machine can be registered per HBA unit (both a virtualization server and a vir-
tual machine cannot be registered in the same WWN).

If you want to manage a copy pair by using the replication functionality of the volume, install
Device Manager agent on each host or on the management server of the copy pair. Host inform-
ation or copy pair information will be sent from Device Manager agent.

Priority for acquiring the WWN

The host that acquires the WWN is determined by which product or application detects it.

If the specified IP address range includes a host with a WWN that is registered, or includes multiple
hosts that have the same WWN, which host acquires the WWN depends on how they are detected.
When hosts are detected by multiple methods, their priority, listed from highest to lowest, is as follows:

A host detected by Device Manager agent.

A host detected by Host Data Collector.
