Loading a Tape Cartridge

Warning!!!

Ensure the subsystem's power is on and the tape drive is ready before loading a
cartridge. Be careful not to insert a cartridge backwards or upside down.

4.5.1

Power on the subsystem. Input power for the 5142-xSE is controlled by the S-series computer.

Note:

Use only cartridges labeled DDS. Never use DAT cartridges because the mechanism of the
cartridge is not certified. Make sure that only one label is stuck to the label area of the
cartridge, and that it is stuck firmly. Never use non-standard labels, and never stick anything
to the cartridge other than in the label area.

4.5.2

Insert a cartridge into the slot on the front panel. The cartridge is now in a semi-loaded state.
The drive threads the tape, initiates a load sequence and goes on-line. The load sequence takes
approximately 20 seconds for a new tape and 15 seconds for a tape already containing data.

4.5.3

During the load sequence, the following occurs:

Tape LED (number 1 in Figure 12) slowly flashes green while the tape is being loaded. The
Tape LED becomes a steady green to indicate the tape is loaded. If an excessive number of errors
are detected, the Media Caution LED (number 2 in Figure 12) flashes amber.
