Installing a Memory
Module

For help installing the memory module, contact your nearest Sony Service
Center.

Turn off your computer and disconnect all the cables.

Remove the battery.

When the computer has completely cooled down, turn it
upside down and remove the screw on the lid of the
memory module.

The computer remains warm after it is turned off. To avoid burns to
fingers or hands, let the computer cool down completely before
detaching the memory module lid.

If a memory module has been installed, remove it.

Lift up the memory module by its edges to remove it.
If you do not need to remove a memory module, skip this step.

Unpacking the memory module.

Discharge static electricity by touching a grounded metal object.
Remove the memory module from its package.

Installing the memory module.

A Match the connector on the memory module unit to the connector on

the computer.

B Press the white stripe of the memory module tightly into place.

Close the memory module lid on the computer.

Fasten the screw tightly.

Turn on your computer. In the System Property window,
select the Performance tab. Check that the memory
amount has expanded correctly.

If the memory amount is correctly expanded, memory installation is
completed. If the memory amount is not correct, turn off your
computer and repeat steps 1 to 6.

Before use

Before using the memory module, please read this manual thoroughly and
retain it for future reference. See also the Sony Notebook Computer User
Guide.
The Sony PCGA-MM164 is the memory module for Sony Notebook
Computers. However, it may not be used with some models.

Precautions

On handling

Electrostatic discharge can damage electronic components. Before touching
a memory expansion module, ensure the following:
• Handle the memory module gently.
• Ensure that you are discharged of static electricity by touching a

grounded metal object.

• Do not work on a carpeted area.
• Do not open the memory module unit package until you are ready to use

it. The package protects the memory module from electrostatic discharge.

On storage

Use the special bag or wrap the module in aluminum foil to protect it from
electrostatic discharge.
Do not subject the memory module to:
• Heat sources, such as radiators or air ducts
• Direct sunlight
• Excessive dust
• Mechanical vibration or shock
• Strong magnets or speakers that are not magnetically shielded
• Ambient temperature of more than 95°F (35°C) or less than 50°F (10°C)
• High humidity

For customers in the U.S.A.

Memory upgrades must be performed by an authorized Sony Service
Center.
If you attempt to upgrade the memory yourself, your memory module
and your computer will not be covered by Sony’s limited warranty.
Technical support for problems involving customer-installed memory
may require fees.

For customers in Europe

On Upgrading the System
Your Notebook Computer and memory modules use high precision
components and electronic connectors’ technology. To avoid the
invalidation of your Guarantee by mishandling, it is recommended that:
• you contact your dealer to install a new memory module,
• you do not install it yourself, if you are not familiar with upgrading

memory on a notebook computer,

• you do not touch the connectors or open the memory panel.
