If you think there is a problem with the way your faxes look, make a copy first. If the copy looks
good, the problem is probably not your machine. Check the chart below and follow the
troubleshooting tips. You can solve most problems by yourself.

Copy Quality Difficulties
Difficulties Suggestions
Vertical streaks appear in copies. Either the scanner or the primary corona wire for printing is dirty. Clean them both.

page 71.)

Poor print quality See Improving the print quality on page 55.
Vertical black lines on copies or
printouts Your machine’s primary corona wire for printing may be dirty. Clean your primary
corona wire. (See Cleaning the corona wire on page 71.)
If the problem continues, call Brother Customer Service at 1-800-284-4329 (in
USA) or 1-877-BROTHER (in Canada).
No printout. „ Check that the machine is plugged in and the power switch is turned on.
„ Check that the toner cartridge and drum unit are installed properly. (See
Replacing the drum unit (DR-520) on page 76.)
„ Check the interface cable connection on both the machine and your computer.
(See the Quick Setup Guide.)
„ Check that the correct printer driver has been installed and chosen.
„ Check to see if the LCD is showing an error message. (See Error messages
on page 59.)
„ The machine is online. On your PC, click Start, then Settings, and then
Printers and Faxes. Right-click ‘Brother DCP-XXXX (where XXXX is your
model name)’. Make sure that ‘Use Printer Offline’ is unchecked.
