Gearbox Installation Notes – 20 / 30 FS Series

Review heading 6c.1 “General Preparation” on page 115.

The drive shaft must be installed first followed by the pump shaft and is
accomplished by following the preceding steps in reverse order.

Make sure a new oil seal (Hale p/n: 296-2220-00-0) is installed into the bell
housing. Apply a coating of general-purpose grease to the seal to ease
installation. (See Figure 6c-1: “20 / 30 FS Series Gearbox and Bell Housing
Overview” on page 117.)

Whenever re-installing the bell housing (flywheel) adapter you must check
the flywheel run-out - see heading “Check Flywheel Run Out” on page 129.

Make sure all bearings are properly seated either within the gearbox housing
or on the appropriate shaft - see Figure 6c-1: “20 / 30 FS Series Gearbox
and Bell Housing Overview” on page 117.

Apply Loctite and install the 1/2”-13 set screw until flush with the gearbox
housing.

Replace all gaskets. Apply a small amount of grease to the gasket(s).

If the gearbox includes a water cooler, install a new gasket and the water
manifold, using the twelve (12) 5/16”-18 screws and washers. Using Loctite
PST or equivalent thread sealant, install bushings, extensions and elbows in
the water manifold, as required.

If a cooler is not included, install the gearbox cover, gasket and twelve (12) 5/
16”-18 screws and washers. Torque screws accordingly - see Table 6-1:
“Typical Torque Values Chart” on page 79.

When sliding the bell housing over the drive shaft be careful not to damage
the oil seal.
