Creating Reference Movies to Optimize Web Playback

A reference movie is a movie that references other movies stored on a web server.
When a user plays the reference movie, one or more of the other movies on the server
downloads or streams to the user as the movie plays.

You can use reference movies to provide the appropriate movie based on a user’s
connection speed. For example, you can have a smaller movie streamed to users
connected over a standard modem, and a larger version of the movie streamed to
users connected over a broadband connection.

You can get a tool for creating reference movies, along with other utilities, on the
developer section of the QuickTime website.
