PHENOLPHTHALEIN (P) AL KA LIN ITY
1.

Fill the test tube (0970-S) to the 10 mL line with sample water.

2.

Add 3 drops of *Phenolphthalein Indicator, 1% (2246). Cap and
mix. If solution does not turn red, the P Alkalinity is zero.

3.

If solution does turn red, the P Alkalinity is determined by drop
count. Fill the pipet (0392) with the *Sulfuric Acid, 0.25N (6402).
Hold the pipet perpendicular over the test tube and slowly add the
*Sulfuric Acid, 0.25N one drop at a time, while gently swirling the
tube. Count the drops and continue the addition until the color
disappears. If T Alkalinity is to be measured also hold the solution
in the tube for the test below.

4.

The P Alkalinity test result is calculated from:

Number of Drops of Reagent x 62.5 = ppm Phenolphthalein

Alkalinity expressed as ppm Calcium Carbonate (CaCO

3

)

TO TAL (T) AL KA LIN ITY
1.

Use the sample from the P Alkalinity test above, or fill the tube to
the 10 mL line with a new water sample.

2.

Add 3 drops of Total Alkalinity Indicator (2786). Cap and mix.
Solution will turn green-blue color.

3.

Fill the pipet (0392) with the *Sulfuric Acid, 0.25N (6402). Add
the reagent slowly to the solution, one drop at a time, while gently
swirling the tube. Count the drops and continue until the green-
blue color changes to pink.

4.

The T Alkalinity test result is calculated from:

Total Number of Drops of Reagent x 62.5 = ppm Total Alkalinity

expressed as ppm Calcium Carbonate (CaCO

3

)

NOTE:

If the same sample is used for both P and T Alkalinity, add

both drop counts to calculate T Alkalinity.

HARD NESS
1.

Fill the test tube (0970-S) to the 5 mL line with sample water.

2.

Add 5 drops of *Hardness Reagent #5 (4483). Swirl to mix.

3.

Add 1 Hardness Reagent #6 Tablet (4484). Swirl until tablet
disintegrates. Solution will turn red.

4.

Fill the pipet (0392) with Hardness Reagent #7. While gently
swirling tube add Hardness Reagent #7 until red color changes to a
clear blue. Count the number of drops added. Hold pipet vertically.

Total Hardness, gpg (CaCO

3

) = Number of Drops of Reagent #7

IRON
1.

Rinse test tube (0970-S) with sample water. Fill test tube
approximately c” with sample water.

2.

Add one *Iron LR Tablet (3725). Crush with stirring rod (0519).

3.

Fill the tube to the 10 mL line with sample water. Mix until tablet
disintegrates. Wait 5 minutes.

4.

Hold the test tube against the white background of the Iron color
chart (3289-CC). Match the sample to a color standard. Record as
ppm Iron.

CHLO RINE (BLEACH) IN FAB RIC
1.

In an inconspicuous area place one drop of the *Chlorine Reagent
O-Tolidine (4100).

2.

The presence of chlorine is indicated by the formation of a yellow
color. With a high level of chlorine a brownish color could be
observed.
CAUTION:

Rinse the test area of the fabric immediately after

tesing since it is strongly acid and could cause future damage to the
fabric.
