Introduction

Description

Integrated bladder blood pressure cuffs for use with manual, electronic and
automated non-invasive blood pressure monitors.

Warnings

A warning statement in this manual identifies a condition or practice which,
if not corrected or discontinued immediately could lead to injury, illness, or
death.

WARNING: Only use the cuff when visible index edge falls within the range
markings indicated on the cuff, otherwise erroneous readings may result.

WARNING: Do not apply the cuff to areas on the patient where skin is
delicate or damaged. Check the cuff site frequently for irritation.

WARNING: The blood pressure cuff must be properly placed on the bare
upper arm over the brachial artery of the patient and wrapped securely in
order to eliminate any residual air in the bladder.

WARNING: Do not apply cuff to limbs used for IV infusion.

WARNING: Minimize cuff movement and limb motion during readings.

WARNING: Ensure an airtight seal at all connection points prior to use.

WARNING: Intravenous Systems (IV) - Do not connect cuffs with luer lock
connectors to intravenous fluid systems or air may enter patient.

Cautions

A caution statement in this manual identifies information within the manual
to avoid equipment failure.

CAUTION: Do not press cuff with a hot iron.

CAUTION: Do not inflate cuff unless the hook and loop is closed.

CAUTION: Do not use steam or heat to sterilize the cuff, or tubing.

CAUTION: Intravenous Systems (IV) – Do not connect cuffs with luer lock
connectors to intravenous fluid systems or fluid may enter the cuff.

CAUTION: Do not allow foreign debris to ingress into the cuff tubes.

Operation

Use the Welch Allyn NOVAPLUS cuff the same as a traditional blood
pressure cuff. The cuff works with manual and automated
sphygmomanometers.

Directions for use

Blood pressure measurements should be taken by trained personnel
following established procedures. Readings can be affected by the position
and physiologic condition of the patient.

1.

Select the appropriate size cuff based on the patient's arm
circumference.

2.

Attach the cuff to the blood pressure monitoring device. For situations
when a two tube cuff with a clamp is being used as a one tube cuff,
be sure to close the clamp tightly to cut off the air flow into the
unused tube.

CAUTION: Connect cuffs to manual, electronic and automated non-invasive
blood pressure monitoring systems only.

3.

Remove clothing from the patient’s upper arm.

4.

Position the cuff on the upper arm a few centimeters above the
antecubital fossa with the artery symbol

over the brachial artery.

5.

Wrap the cuff securely and press the hook and loop fasteners
together to secure the cuff. The index edge of the cuff should fall
within the recommended

area. Choose a smaller size cuff

when the index edge falls in the

area. Select a larger

cuff when the index edge falls in the

area.

NOTE: The use of the wrong size cuff can affect the accuracy of the
measurement.

6.

Take blood pressure in the normal manner. For electronic and
automated monitoring, be sure to follow the monitor manufacturer's
instructions.

Cleaning/Maintenance

Clean and disinfect as required.

CAUTION: Examine for physical integrity after cleaning or disinfection.

It is recommended that used product be thoroughly cleaned between
uses.

Care should be taken to keep liquid from entering the tubes and
inflation bulb/valve. Liquid inside the tubes may damage the monitor
or affect the accuracy of the blood pressure reading.

To clean/disinfect, utilize a surface disinfectant/decontaminant cleaner
(example: CaviCide*) and follow the directions on the disinfectant/
decontaminant label. Allow the cuff to air dry thoroughly after cleaning
and rinsing.

• NOVAPLUS Disposable Vinyl Cuffs meet performance requirements after 5

applications of this cleaning method.

• NOVAPLUS Disposable Soft Cuffs meet performance requirements after 1

application of this cleaning method.

To spot clean tubing, bulb, valve, and cuffs, wipe using a mild
detergent on a slightly damp cloth. Allow to air dry thoroughly before
use.

The user is responsible for validating any deviations from the
recommended cleaning method.
