Pediatric Axillary

(Patients 17 years and younger)

If you question a reading, recheck the temperature using the monitor mode on
your thermometer. Take a temperature as described.

>

Continue to hold the probe in place after the temperature displays

>

Press the Mode Selection button

until the Monitor Mode

indicator

appears on the screen

>

Continue taking the temperature for three minutes (oral and rectal) or five
minutes (axillary)

>

Long term continuous monitoring is not recommended in any mode.

The following may interfere with accurate readings
for up to 20 minutes:

>

Ingesting hot or cold liquids

>

Brushing teeth

>

Eating

>

Chewing gum or mints

>

Smoking

>

Activity such as climbing stairs or running.

1. Ensure that the probe with the red ejection button and red probe well are

installed.

2. Remove the probe from the probe well.

3. Observe the Rectal Mode indicator on the display (flashing lower

body icon).

4. Load a Welch Allyn Probe cover. Apply lubricant if desired.

5. Separate the buttocks and gently insert the probe only 1.5 cm (

inch),

less for infants and children.

Rectal

1. Ensure that the probe with the blue ejection button and blue probe

well are installed.

2. Remove the probe from the probe well.

3. Observe the Oral Mode indicator on the display (flashing head

icon).

If this icon is not flashing, press the Mode Selection

button until

the icon appears.

4. Load a Welch Allyn probe cover.

5. Place the probe tip deep into the patient’s sublingual pocket as

shown.

Sublingual Pockets

1. Ensure that the probe with the blue ejection button and blue probe

well are installed.

2. Remove the probe from the probe well.

3. Press Mode Selection button

to select the Adult Axillary Mode.

4. Observe the Adult Axillary Mode indicator on the display

(flashing axillary icon).

5. Load a Welch Allyn probe cover.

6. Adjust clothing to visualize the axilla.

7. Avoid folds in the axilla and place the probe tip vertically as high as

you can as shown.

8. Place the arm at the patient’s side. Hold in this position without

movement of the arm or probe during the measurement cycle.

Adult Axillary

(Patients 18 years and older)

Oral

6. Do not hand the probe to the patient to place in his or her own mouth.

7. Always hold the probe in place, maintaining tissue contact until

temperature is complete.

5. Load a Welch Allyn probe cover.

6. Adjust clothing to visualize the axilla.

7. Avoid folds in the axilla and place the probe tip vertically as

high as you can as shown.

8. Place the arm snugly at the child’s side. Hold the arm in this position

without movement of the arm or probe during the measurement cycle.
