Update Software
Each 9160 has two flash memory banks that store software:
• The Active Flash Memory holds the software currently in use
• The Inactive Flash Memory holds the new software from a download or the older version of
software
Software is downloaded to the inactive memory to avoid disrupting service. Resetting the 9160 and
swapping banks does not affect operation and is transparent to user traffic.
You can check the current version of software at the Description Report screen.
If you need to upgrade the software, follow these steps:
1. Download the new software from the Canoga Perkins web site to your FTP or TFTP server; put
the software in the directory of your choice.
2. Go to the Host Access Table (see page 3-8) and verify that the entry for the host you will use for
the file transfer allows FTP access.
3. From your FTP or TFTP server, follow these steps at the DOS prompt:
a. Go to the directory that holds the new software.
b. Type " FTP " and the IP address for the 9160.
c. Log on with your username and password.
d. Type " bin " to enable transfer in binary mode.
e. Put the filename for the new software.
4. When " Transfer complete " appears, you can log on in a regular VT100 session, access the
Utilities menu, and type 4, Swap Banks" to reset the 9160 and start using the new software.
Managing Security
To effectively provide system security for a variety of network applications, the 9160 works with
SNMPv3. To use SNMPv3 security, set up the engine ID for the SNMPv3 agent in the device; for
details, see the documentation for the server and software.
As you set up values for various security parameters on your 9160, see the documentation for your
network security system for details on and values for those security parameters. Typically, you must
have supervisor access to set up security for the 9160.
