Steering Shaft

Refer to the INSPECTION section of this chapter

for information on when to replace the steering
shaft.

To remove the steering shaft and the bearings
that support it:

1.

Remove the hood for easy access:

1a. Open the hood.

1b. Disconnect the headlights

1c. Disconnect the check cables using a 3/8”

wrench.

1d. Remove the hairpin clips that hold the

hood to the hinge pins, slide the hood to
the operator’s left, and lift it off of the vehi-
cle.

If the vehicle has a cab on it, remove any cab
components that may prevent the dash panel
from being removed.

3.

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery
(located beneath the driver’s seat), to prevent
any electrical connections from shorting-out.

4.

Match-mark and unplug the electrical connec-
tions to the dash panel: See Figure 4.79.

5.

Remove the grab handle from the passenger’s
side of the dash panel using a 1/2” wrench.
See Figure 4.80.

6.

Remove the two screws that secure the top
edge of the dash panel to the hood and dash
mount brackets using a 5/16” wrench.
See Figure 4.81.
