Dell PowerConnect 3248 and

PowerConnect 5224 Switches

The Dell

PowerConnect

3248 and

PowerConnect 5224 switches are designed to

deliver exceptional levels of performance and

manageability at the edge of the network.

Space-Saving Performance

The PowerConnect 3248 provides 48 Fast Ethernet ports in a 1U form factor, ideal for a rack-dense, high performance
wiring closet solution. Designed to deliver wire-speed Layer 2 switching performance across all ports, the switch
integrates — into the front panel — dual Gigabit Ethernet uplinks including built-in 1000BaseT ports and optional
1000BaseSX and 1000BaseLX ports with transceiver modules. The PowerConnect 3248 is an ideal edge switch for
medium and large enterprise networks.

The PowerConnect 5224 incorporates 24 Gigabit Ethernet ports in a 1U form factor capable of wire-speed switching
throughput with a total switching capacity of up to 48Gb/s. The 24 ports are built-out as 10/100/1000BaseT ports,
and four of these ports can accommodate optional 1000BaseSX and 1000BaseLX transceivers to support fiber media.
The PowerConnect 5224 is an ideal switch for data center connectivity, Layer 2 traffic aggregation and emerging
Gigabit Ethernet client connectivity.

Switch Management

The PowerConnect 3248 and PowerConnect 5224 support a variety of management interfaces, including an easy
to use embedded Web interface and an industry standard command line interface (CLI), which allows your network
administrator to utilize existing switch configuration skills. The switches can be managed remotely via a Web
browser, Telnet or simple network management protocol (SNMP) and support a comprehensive management
information base (MIB) as well as four RMON groups. This broad management support helps ensure integration
into a variety of third party network management applications.

RADIUS support enables centralized, remote authentication of administrative access to the switch. In addition,
the switches can store dual configuration and firmware images, while supporting the upload and download of
configuration and firmware files to a server.

Layer 3 and Layer 4 Traffic Classification

Giving priority to data packets that are associated with critical network traffic is a key requirement for deploying
emerging applications like video conferencing and voice-over-IP. The PowerConnect 3248 and PowerConnect 5224
provide four priority queues per port. Packets can be classified based on the Layer 2 IEEE 802.1p standard, Layer 3
IP Precedence or IP Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) standard, or Layer 4 standard utilizing TCP/UDP
ports (Layer 4 supported in PowerConnect 3248 only). This helps you increase your deployment flexibility and
protect your networking infrastructure investment.

Advanced Protocol Support

Supporting emerging industry standards, both PowerConnect switches are designed to provide interoperability
with your core networking equipment and offer ease of use and availability. The supported standards include
dynamic VLANs (GVRP), dynamic link aggregation (LACP) and IP Multicast (IGMP v1 and v2).

Peripherals Support

Overall availability can be further increased by deploying the optional Dell PowerConnect RPS-600 redundant
power system. Each PowerConnect RPS-600 provides a dedicated, redundant power supply for up to four
PowerConnect 3248 or PowerConnect 5224 switches, eliminating the switch’s internal power supply as a single
point of failure.

Moreover, the optional 1000SX and 1000LX optical Gigabit Ethernet transceivers are small form-factor pluggable
(SFP) designs and support distances between 220m and 5km, depending on the type of fiber media used.

Dell PowerConnect 3248 and PowerConnect 5224 switches deliver performance and flexibility, while easily
integrating into your existing network environment.
