If you are having a problem with your unit, check this list for a possible solution before calling for service.
If you cannot solve the problem from the hints given here, or the unit has been physically damaged, call a qualified person,
such as your dealer, for service.

Symptom

Unable to cancel the display demonstration.

No sound is heard.

Hard to listen to broadcasts because of
noise.

The disc sound is discontinuous.

The disc tray does not open or close.

The disc does not play.

The disc reading time is too long or the disc
cannot be ejected by pressing

0.

Impossible to turn off Pro Logic while
playing back a CD.

No picture appears on the screen.

DVD does not play back.

The left and right edges of the picture are
missing on the screen.

No subtitle appears on the display though
you have selected the initial subtitle
language.

Audio language is different from the one
you have selected as the initial audio
language.

Impossible to record.

Operations are disabled.

Unable to operate the unit from the remote
control.

Cause

Other buttons are pressed to cancel the
display demonstration.

• Connections are incorrect or loose.

• You are playing a disc encoded with DTS

Digital Surround.

• Antennas are disconnected.

• The AM loop antenna is too close to the

unit.

• The FM antenna is not properly extended

and positioned.

The disc is scratched or dirty.

• The AC power cord is not plugged in.
• Trays are locked.

The disc is placed upside down.

The disc is placed upside down.

“ON” is selected as Pro Logic setting.

• The video cord is not connected correctly.
• An incorrect input has been selected on

the TV or monitor.

Parental lock is in use.

“4:3 PS

” is selected when viewing on a

conventional TV (aspect ratio 4:3).

Small tabs on the top of the cassette are
removed.

The built-in microprocessor may
malfunction due to external electrical
interference.

• The path between the remote control and

the remote sensor on the unit is blocked.

• The batteries are exhausted.

Action

Press CANCEL/DEMO on the unit. (See
page 10.)

• Check all connections and make

corrections. (See pages 6 to 10.)

• This unit cannot output DTS sound

without connecting a decoder compatible
with DTS Digital Surround (with
“DIGITAL AUDIO OUTPUT” to
“STREAM/PCM”—See page 37.)

• Reconnect the antennas correctly and

securely.

• Change the position and direction of the

AM loop antenna.

• Extend the FM antenna at the best

position.

Clean or replace the disc. (See page 47.)

• Plug the AC power cord.
• Unlock the trays. (See page 23.)

Place the disc with the label side up.

Change source to another one (ex. FM/AM),
eject the disc, and place it with the label
side up.

Show the on-screen menu by selecting a
DVD or VCD as a playing source or leaving
the disc tray opened, then change the Pro
Logic setting to “AUTO” or “OFF.” (See
page 37.)

• Connect the video cord correctly.
• Select the correct input on the TV or

monitor.

Unlock the parental lock. (See page 41.)

Select “4:3 LB

.” (See page 39.)

Some DVDs are programed to always
display no subtitle initially. If this happens,
press SUBTITLE on the remote control
after starting play. (See page 37.)

Some DVDs are programed to always use
the original language initially. If this
happens, press AUDIO while holding down
SHIFT on the remote control after starting
play. (See page 37.)

Cover the holes with adhesive tape.

Unplug the AC power cord and then plug it
back in.

• Remove the obstruction.

• Replace the batteries.
