(1) Frame, (2) Cam, (3) Springs, (4) Rope channels, (5) Attachment hole.

Principal materials:

Aluminum, stainless steel.

3. Inspection, points to verify

Before each use

Verify that the product has no cracks, deformation, marks, excessive wear,

corrosion, etc.

Verify the springs are present and working properly.

Check the cam’s mobility.

Make sure there are no foreign objects in the mechanism.

Consult the details of the inspection procedure to be carried out for each item

of PPE on the Web at www.petzl.com/ppe

During each use

It is important to regularly inspect the condition of the product. Check its

connections with the other equipment in the system and make sure that the

various pieces of equipment in the system are correctly positioned with respect

to each other.

Contact PETZL if there is any doubt about the condition of this product.

4. Compatibility

Verify that this product is compatible with the other elements of the system in

your application (compatible = good functional interaction).

Ropes

The SHUNT works on:

- single 10 to 11 mm diameter ropes that have a core and sheath (EN 892

dynamic, EN 1891 semi-static, static).

- doubled 8 to 11 mm diameter ropes that have a core and sheath (EN 892

dynamic, EN 1891 semi-static, static). Use two strands of the same diameter

rope.

Warning: certain ropes can slip and and reduce the the SHUNT’s braking

effectiveness, for example new ropes, ropes with sheath treatments, wet,

frozen, or muddy ropes, etc.

Connector

Use a locking connector, preferably oval or pear-shaped. Verify that your

connector is compatible with the SHUNT. Make sure that the connector is

always loaded on its major axis.

5. Working principle

The SHUNT slides along the rope in one direction and jams in the other

direction. If the cam is loaded, it pinches the rope in the channels and the

device jams on the rope. The cam and the frame must always be able to rotate

freely.

Warning: any pressure or hindrance on the cam, or on the device, will prevent

it from jamming.

6. Setting up the SHUNT

1. Push the cam through to the back of the device.

2. Hold the cam towards the back and place the strand(s) of rope in the

channels, in the desired direction of jamming.

3. Release the cam. Clip a locking carabiner in the device’s attachment hole.

Clip the carabiner into the belay loop of your harness. Lock the carabiner.

7. Function test

Each time the device is installed onto the rope, verify that it jams in the desired

direction.

8. Uses

Self-belaying for rappelling

Attach the SHUNT below your descender.

Do not grip the SHUNT with your entire hand.

Rope climbing

Use the SHUNT with another ascender, and a footloop. The two ascenders must

be attached to the harness with a locking assembly (connector or lanyard +

connector).

Warning: do not climb above the rope clamp/grab or the anchor point and

keep your rope under tension. In case of a fall, the energy is absorbed by the

rope. As you get closer to the anchor point, the rope has less energy absorbing

capacity: there must be no shock loading when close to the anchor.

Unjamming under load

Pull the rope below the SHUNT and orient it along the axis of the rope.

Other uses

Refer to the «Product Experience» document at www.petzl.com
