Serial Numbers

Carrier Assembly Serial Numbers

Starting in May of 1987, Spicer began assigning serial numbers to carrier assemblies in addition to a date code.

The “Serialized Julian” serial numbers are stamped into the carrier casting or on a metal tag affixed to the

carrier.

The carrier assembly serial number consists of ten characters; a letter followed by nine numerals.

The letter designation indicates the producing plant; either an “H” for Henderson, Kentucky plant, or “G” for

Glasgow, Kentucky plant. A five digit Julian date code follows, the first two digits indicates the year, and the last

three indicates the day of the year. The last four digits are a number unique to each axle.

Older Model Serial Numbers

Units built before February 1982 used a 4 digit date code which was stamped into the carrier casting.

The first 3 digits representing the day of the year, and the last digit represents the year

(Exm H2328 232nd day of 1978). After February 1982 they went to a 5 digit date code, same format,

but added 2 digits for the year. In May 1987 Spicer went to a serialized julian date code system that

represents the unique serial number. The serial number as explained above is stamped into the carrier

or onto a metal tag attached to the carrier.

Axle Housing Serial Numbers

Axle Housings are identified with tags that also have serial numbers. All axle housing serial numbers are

internal to the manufacturing plant and cannot be used identifying any other Spicer component, refer to

the carrier assembly tag.

Drive Axle Specification Numbers

The axle specifications numbers are stamped onto a metal tag attached to the carrier assembly, see

page 3. On older axles produced without a metal tag, the specification number was stamped into the

right side arm of the axle housing. The specification number consisted of the letter “S” followed by a 5

digit number, followed again by a letter (A,B,C or D). As with the newer specification numbers this

stamped number will identify all components of the axles built by Spicer.
