A/C Dye Injection Kit for Hybrid Vehicles

U.S. Patent No. 5,167,140

Fast, easy A/C dye injection for hybrid vehicles

Tracer-Stick

®

capsules are prefilled with Fluoro-Lite

®

fluorescent dye. When used with a Tracerline

®

ultraviolet or

blue-light inspection lamp, the dye will pinpoint the exact
source of leaks with a bright glow. Effective fluorescent leak
detection requires that there be enough refrigerant in the A/C
system to operate the compressor and circulate the dye.

PLEASE NOTE

Wipe all dye spills immediately to prevent damage to
paints and finishes. Dye may stain hands and clothing.

1. To purge the system, attach one purge/service fitting to

the low-side hose/coupler (Fig. 1A). Connect the capsule
between the service hose and the second purge/service
fitting (Fig. 1B). Connect that purge/service fitting to a
refrigerant source and allow the air to purge from the
hose (Fig. 1C).

2. After purging, install the Tracer-Stick capsule between the

pressurized hose and the purge/service fitting, with the
arrow pointing in the direction of the refrigerant flow (Fig.
2A)
. Connect the hose to the low-side service port (Fig. 2B).

3. With the system operating, open the manifold valve to

allow the refrigerant (liquid refrigerant works best) to flow
through the Tracer-Stick capsule and flush the Fluoro-Lite
dye into the system. Add refrigerant slowly to avoid
system damage.
Once the Tracer-Stick clears, close the
valve closest to the refrigerant source and allow all hoses
to reach low-side pressure.

4. Remove the entire assembly and discard the empty

capsule.

5. Run the system for 5 to 10 minutes to allow the Fluoro-

Lite dye to circulate thoroughly. Inspect the system with a
high-intensity Tracerline

®

lamp. All leaks will show with a

bright green fluorescent glow. The glow will show best
under low light conditions. Bright light reduces the visible
fluorescent response. Be sure to wear UV-absorbing
glasses to see the fluorescence clearly and to protect
eyes.

6. After the repair is completed, clean off all fluorescent dye

residue using water-based Tracerline GLO-AWAY™ dye
cleaner or a general-purpose shop cleaner.

7. After cleaning, check all areas with the lamp to make sure

no dye residue remains. Run the system a second time
and inspect with the lamp. If there is no glow, all leaks
have been found and repaired.

Technical Tip!

To verify that the AC&R system is properly treated
with Fluoro-Lite dye
: Locate the system sight glass or
release a minute amount of refrigerant onto a dark cloth
and check for a bright glow with the inspection lamp.
