OPERATION

5.1 Front Panel Features

The Baseband Modem has an uncluttered and easy to understand front panel. It has a liquid crystal display
(LCD), 5 LED’s, and 6 non-locking keys. With the 16 character alphanumeric, dot-matrix liquid crystal
display it is possible to describe most of the functions in plain English, thus avoiding having to use
complicated mnemonics and the need to constantly refer to a hand book.

The 6 front panel keys are as follows:

MENU (left and right)

Used to change menus.

SCROLL (up and down) Used to scroll through items within a menu.
SELECT

Used to activate/deactivate the feature displayed.

TX NRDY

Used to send a Not Ready pattern to line.
This pattern is termed Controlled Not Ready (CNR) and consists
of alternate 1's and 0's with the status line OFF. (Note that the
pattern will not be sent if there is a loop back in operation.)

The LCD display is complemented by the use of 5 LED ‘s to indicate the following :

(1)

FAULT (Red LED)
This is lit to indicate the line signal is faulty; the main causes of this are as follows:
(1) No signal received (i.e. line broken / disconnected)
(2) Incorrect line rate
(3) Incorrect user data rate
Further information is provided in the status menu, (see section 5.3.2).

(2)

TM, [Test Mode] (Red LED)
This is illuminated when ever a test mode is active, (i.e. a pattern is being generated, or
a loop is being applied).

(3)

RX NRDY, [Not Ready received from line] (Yellow LED)
This lights whenever a Not Ready pattern is being received (UNR or CNR), and a
structured user rate is in use, (a rate which has a status line)

(4)

RXD, [Received Data] (Yellow LED)
This indicates the presence of the user data, (on for a '1' / off for a '0').

(5)

TX NRDY, [Transmitting Not Ready] (Yellow LED)
This is provided to display the state of the TX NRDY key. On means the TX NRDY key has
been pressed.

If the equipment is left in a display other than Status for greater than one minute the display will
automatically time out and revert to the top line of the status menu.
