Overview of Compatible PAV Operations

The two device types for Compatible PAV operations are:

Base device – 3390B: A base device is an LDEV that is formatted. A base device must be defined to the

host as a 3390B device type (for example, 3390B-3 or 3390B-9).

CAUTION:

The device used as a journal volume of Universal Replicator for z/OS® cannot be used

as a base device.

Alias device – 3390A: An alias device is an unused logical device that is generated in the IOCDS and

the XP but not installed. Alias devices cannot be modified online. Each alias must be within the same

logical CU image as the base device to which it is assigned. An alias device must be defined to the

host as a 3390A device type (for example, 3390A-3 or 3390A-9).

NOTE:

The 3390A and 3390B devices are not related to the 3390-3A/B/C multiplatform devices.

Controller Emulation Type

The IBM® 2105 controller emulation type is required for Compatible PAV operations. Each logical CU

image on the XP1024/XP128 that contains Compatible PAV base and alias devices must be set for 2105

controller emulation. For an XP12000/XP10000 you can use controller emulation 2105 and 2107 if you

want too use Compatible Hyper PAV.

NOTE:

To configure copy devices and Compatible PAV devices under the same logical CU image, refer

to

Table 3

on page 19 for important information and instructions. Copy devices include TrueCopy

(TC390), Universal Replicator for z/OS®, PPRC, and XRC devices.

Command View XP or XP Remote Web Console based Compatible PAV

Compatible PAV running under Command View XP or XP Remote Web Console configures the Compatible

PAV devices on XP1024/XP128/XP12000/XP10000 that have been registered with Command View XP or

XP Remote Web Console. Compatible PAV displays the LDEVs in use and the unassigned LDEV IDs that are

available for use as aliases. You can use Compatible PAV to assign aliases to base devices and cancel

aliases.

NOTE:

Compatible PAV will not function for an XP1024/XP128/XP12000/XP10000 that does not have

the Compatible PAV option enabled on it (see

Enabling the Compatible PAV Options

” on page 24).

HCD Definitions for the XP1024/XP128/XP12000/XP10000 Compatible PAV Devices

The Compatible PAV base and alias devices on the XP1024/XP128/XP12000/XP10000 must be defined

to the host system using HCD. The XP1024/XP128/XP12000/XP10000 base devices must be 3390B

devices (for example, 3390B-3) and the XP1024/XP128/XP12000/XP10000 alias devices must be

3390A devices (for example, 3390A-3). The required controller emulation for each

XP1024/XP128/XP12000/XP10000 CU image that contains Compatible PAV devices is 2105 or 2107

emulation.

Using HCD to Define an XP1024/XP12000/XP10000 LCU and the Base and Alias Devices

on page 39 provides sample instructions on using HCD to define an Compatible PAV device.
