SECTION 7 – OPERATION - ALL MACHINES

USING THE SUPERWEEDER AS A HARROW ONLY
To use your Summers Superweeder for pre-emergence
chemical incorporation, (Example: Treflan incorporated over
seeded wheat) simply fully extend the S-tine controlling cyl-
inders. This will rotate S-tines completely out of the ground
(6” ground clearance) and thus convert the Superweeder
into a “straight harrow”.
NEVER rotate S-tines forward or backward with machine in
transport position.
ALWAYS watch machine carefully when rotating S-tines for-
ward in case an S-tine has accidentally caught on a harrow
section.
ALWAYS be sure transport locking pins are in the lock posi-
tion when making adjustments on the machine in the raised
or transport position.

CABLE PULL BRACKETS
Under severe conditions (heavy machine draft due to deep
penetration or high field speed) cable pull brackets may tend
to slide on drawbar wing tube, resulting in improper cable
adjustment. The recommended solution to this problem is to
relocated cable pull brackets at exact desired position then
weld a stop on drawbar itself next to cable pull brackets.

ADD DRAWBAR
It is important to check the tightness of the ADD Draw-
bar plate bolts after the first day of use and weekly there-
after. The ADD Drawbar (Adjustable Double Disk) is a
feature exclusive to Summers machines and provides
for precise machine leveling.
Rotating the ADD Drawbar plates will raise or lower the lift
arms on the wing of a machine in relation to the lift arms on
the center section. Rotating the plates one hole will change
the height at the end of a Superweeder lift arm approximately
1-1/2”. After 10 hours of use, recheck that wing sections are
running level with center section. Re-level with ADD if re-
quired. When level, spot weld plates as shown in drawing
below. Spot welds must be ground off prior to future leveling.

FIRST-TIME OPERATING PROCEDURE
1.

Back up the machine to spread it out but do not lower
machine to ground.

2.

As the machine is lowered the cable attached to the draw-
bar center will tighten causing the lock cups to rotate
and lock the cable lift arms in place. The tension in this
cable must be watched the first time the machine is low-
ered.

3.

Have someone slowly lower the machine while you ob-
serve the tension in this cable. If the lock cups on the
latch assembly are fully locked (become solid) before
the machine is completely lowered, the cable will have
to be lengthened. If the lock cups on the latch assembly
only partially lock when the machine is completely low-
ered, the cable will have to be shortened.

4.

To adjust the cable, simply loosen the two cable clamps
and make the necessary adjustment. Caution: A small
change in cable length greatly affects cable tension –
adjust with care.

5.

With the machine down in field position, attach the pull
cables to the cable pull arms. Then raise the machine
and drive ahead slowly while carefully observing the
operation of the entire system. If the system functions
smoothly, the installation is complete.

WARNING: Damage may occur to the auto-fold system
if the lock cups do not clear the cable fold arms as the
machine is lowered. The cable fold arms must rest
against the hitch frame when machine is lowered. If the
cable fold arms swing outward slightly as the machine
is lowered, this means the operator must back up
BEFORE lowering the machine.

TRANSPORT AND STORAGE

ALL AUTO-FOLD MACHINES

At the beginning and end of every season, grease all zerks
with a good grade of multi-purpose grease. Detach the cables
from the cable fold arms whenever transporting long dis-
tances or storing machine for winter. Always detach the cables
when the machine is in field position prior to folding for trans-
port.
