4.3.5.

THE CALCULATOR 5 (CAL 5) PAGE

The CAL 5 page is used to determine the true airspeed (TAS) of the
aircraft.

To calculate the true airspeed (TAS):

Turn on the cursor (

).

Enter the aircraft’s calibrated
airspeed by using the right inner
knob (figure 4-70). If the
calibrated airspeed isn’t known,
use the indicated airspeed. For
most aircraft the difference
between the calibrated airspeed

and the indicated airspeed is small at cruise airspeeds.

Use the right outer knob to move the cursor to the Prs: field, and

then use the right inner knob to enter the aircraft’s pressure
altitude. If the pressure altitude was previously calculated on the
CAL 3 page, or entered on the CAL 4 page, it will already be
displayed.

Move the cursor to the first Temp: position, and then enter the

outside air temperature (degrees C) by using the right inner and

outer knobs (figure 4-71). The
first digit of the temperature is
either “0” if the temperature is
above zero or “-” if the tempera-
ture is below zero. For maximum
accuracy, the total air tempera-
ture should be entered. This is
the temperature of air including the effect of heating due to the
aircraft’s movement through the air. The temperature read on a
standard outside air temperature gauge found on most piston air-
craft is “total air temperature”. Since the difference between
static air temperature and the observed air temperature (or “total
air temperature”) is usually negligible, any temperature entered
on the CAL 4 page is transferred to this page. The true airspeed
(TAS) is now displayed.

THE CALCULATOR 6 (CAL 6) PAGE

The CAL 6 page is used to determine the present wind direction and
speed. In addition, the headwind or tailwind component of the wind is
displayed.
