interactions with the column. The Metrohm analytical columns are equip-
ped with a chip on which their technical specifications and their history
(first use / setting up, operating hours, injections, ... ) are saved.
1.2 Intended use
The 850 Professional IC – Anion MSM-HC – MCS – Prep 1 is used
for ion chromatographic determination of anions with sequential sup-
pression and inline sample preparation:
Sequential suppression consists of:
￭ Chemical suppression by the High Capacity Metrohm Suppressor Mod-
ule (MSM-HC) (see Chapter 3.16, page 57) and subsequent
￭ CO
2
suppression by the Metrohm CO
2
Suppressor (MCS) (see Chapter
3.18, page 65).
The use of this technology reduces background conductivity to a mini-
mum and improves the detection accuracy.
If required, the instrument can also be used for the determination of cati-
ons and anions without suppression.
The peristaltic pump and the cell holder in the lower part of the instru-
ment make it possible to use various IC equipments for inline sample
preparation, e.g.:

The present instrument is suitable for processing chemicals and flammable
samples. The usage of the 850 Professional IC – Anion MSM-HC – MCS –
Prep 1 therefore requires that the user has basic knowledge and experi-
ence in the handling of toxic and caustic substances. Knowledge with
respect to the application of the fire prevention measures prescribed for
laboratories is also mandatory.
