Introduction

This professional all-tube amplifier was developed to meet

the exacting specifications of Edward Van Halen, one of the

true living legends of rock guitar. The 5150-III 50 Watt head

amp’s flexible feature set allows creation of tones from clean

to crunch to full-out distortion, inspiring limitless artistic

expression; its roadworthy no-compromise construction pro-

mises peak performance for years to come.

Unique features include:

• Ultra high gain preamp design, custom voiced for

maximum harmonic content

• Custom heavy-duty footswitch with simplified “step on the

channel you want” configuration

• Front-panel metal grill with EVH striped motif

• Color-coded Channel and Footswitch LEDs

• Built-in head lock for use on the EVH 212ST tilt-back

speaker enclosure.

A . INSERT—Plug your guitar in here. Use only a high-quality

shielded instrument cable.

CHANNEL ONE / CHANNEL TWO—

Clean channel / Medium Gain Channel

NOTE: For a cleaner sound from these channels, set the VOLUME

knob to its maximum, and start with the GAIN control at a mini-

mum setting, bringing it up to the desired level.

B . GAIN—Pre-amp gain control. Higher settings of this knob will

increase preamp distortion.

C . LOW / MID / HIGH—Low, middle, and high–frequency tone

controls.

D . VOLUME—Post pre-amp gain control.
E . SELECT—Push button selects Channel 1 (green LED) or Channel

2 (blue LED) alternately.

CHANNEL THREE—High Gain channel

F . GAIN—Pre-amp gain control. Higher settings of this knob will

increase preamp distortion.

G . LOW / MID / HIGH—Low, middle, and high–frequency tone

controls.

H . VOLUME—Post pre-amp gain control.
I . SELECT—Push button selects Channel 3 (red LED).
J . PRESENCE—Ultra-high frequency tone control for all three

channels.

K . POWER LAMP—Indicates amplifier is ON when illuminated.

L . POWER INPUT—Connect the included power cord in accordance

with the voltage and frequency ratings listed on the rear panel of

the amplifier.

M . FUSE—Replace with same rating only.

N . POWER—Turns the amp ON-OFF. After turning the POWER switch

to ON, wait 30 seconds for the tubes to warm up, then turn the

STANDBY switch to ON to take the amp out of STANDBY mode.

Before turning the amp POWER to OFF, place the amp in STANDBY

by tuning this switch to OFF for 10 seconds before turning the

POWER to OFF.

O . STANDBY—Place this switch in the OFF position to put the amp

in STANDBY mode. This should be done when taking a break from

playing or before turning the amp POWER to OFF as outlined above

in the POWER section. Using the STANDBY mode prolongs the life

of the tubes in the amp.

P . HEADPHONES—Plug your headphones in here. The amp mutes

speaker output automatically.

Q . MIDI IN—Connect a MIDI controller here to enable channel selec-

tion and effects loop bypass using MIDI commands.

To set up and use MIDI for channel selection:

1 .

Press both channel SELECT buttons {E and I} simultaneously to

enter MIDI "Learning Mode." The current amp channel LED will

start to blink.

2 .

Send any desired Program Change message on any desired chan-

nel from your MIDI controller to the amp. The amp channel 1 LED

will start to blink unless you have previously assigned that Program

Change message to a different amp channel, in which case the pre-

viously assigned channel LED will start to blink.

3 .

Select the target amp channel (1, 2 or 3) using the channel SELECT

buttons {E or I}. All three amp channel LEDs will briefly illuminate
