NOTE
The use of the handle for the Ie Gage is strongly
recommended for all applications but particularly
for those involving moving substrates.

Make certain the area to be measured is free of
surface variations as described above.

Select the proper range instrument giving priority
to the lightweight gages as being the most
appropriate for moving samples.

Hold the gage with its axis at 90° with respect
to the direction of travel of the moving sample.
Tilt the gage so only ODe outside wheel makes
contact with the moving surface. This allows the
gage to come to the speed of the moving surface
prior to the center wheel contacting the coating
and minimizes the effect of any skidding. Level the
gage so both outside edges make uniform contact
and allow the gage to complete one revolution.

Lift the gage quickly and read as described above.
If the two readings are not the same, the lowest
reading represents the correct thickness.

Record the reading and immediately clean the
gage with a soft clean cloth moistened with
appropriate solvent.
