12. Confirm the TFTP download by entering

y

or

yes

and pressing the Enter key.

13. The IP Console Switch verifies the download. Enter

y

or

yes

to confirm the

upgrade, then press the Enter key.

14. The IP Console Switch begins the FLASH upgrade process. On-screen indicators

display the upgrade process. When the upload is complete, the IP Console Switch
resets and upgrades the internal subsystems. This process takes a few minutes.
When the upgrade is complete, the startup message from step 4 is displayed in
the IP Viewer HyperTerminal dialog box.

CAUTION: Do not cycle power to the IP Console Switch during this process. A
loss of power might render the IP Console Switch inoperable and require that the
unit be returned to the factory for repair. Be patient; the update can take as long
as 10 minutes.

15. Click X to exit the IPViewer Hyper Terminal window.

Analyzing FLASH Failures

At times a FLASH update fails. Unlike the IP Console Switch, which returns a failure
message when it encounters any problems, a FLASH update failure gives no direct
indications that a failure occurred.

When a failure occurs, you must verify several aspects of the update:

• Be sure that TFTP is configured properly. TFTP is an unreliable transport

mechanism. A busy network can result in lost packets, which would cause the
update to fail.

• Be sure that the tftpd log file /var/log/secure is secure. The log indicates if a

successful tftpd connection was made and if any abnormal operations occurred.

• Be sure that the proper pathname to the image file is used.
