Using the Web Configurator

6-1

This section introduces the configuration and functions of the Web Configurator.

6.1 Introduction

The embedded Web Configurator offers advanced management features and allows you to manage the switch from
anywhere on the network through a standard browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Navigator.

The Web Configurator supports Internet Explorer 4.0 and Netscape Communicator 4.x and later versions. It is
based on Java Applets with an aim to reduce network bandwidth consumption, enhance access speed and present an
easy viewing screen.

By default, Internet Explorer 4.0 does not allow Java Applets to open sockets. The user has to

explicitly modify the browser setting to enable Java Applets to use network ports. See Appendix

A Microsoft Internet Explorer Setup. You don’t need to change any configuration if you use

Netscape browser. However, Netscape browser doesn’t support TFTP firmware upgrade.

6.2 System Login

Disconnect the Console port connection before launching the Web Configurator.

Step 1.

Start Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator web browser.

Step 2.

Type http:// and the IP address of the switch ( for example, the default is 192.168.1.1 ) in the Location or
Address field. Press Enter.
