3.3 Condensation

When the M345 is operated at temperatures below the dew point of its environment, condensation
will appear on the surface. The only way to eliminate this is to purge the aperture region with dry

nitrogen gas or operate the M345 in a room that has a dew point below the setpoint temperature.

3.4 Uniformity Adjustments

The M345 has a trimming adjustment for each cooler/heater row. This model has 4 adjustable
cooler/heaters sections. The adjustments are on the rear panel and correspond directly to the
positions below.

Caution: Please note that the sensing RTD is at row 1. Adjusting this trimmer will alter
the temperatures of all other sections as the controller tries to recover. These have

been factory set. Altering these controls are at the user’s risk.

The procedure to adjust the trimmers is:

1. At the desired setpoint temperature, set all trimmers to the CW position (full power).
2. Wait sufficient time for everything to settle down.
3. With an IR imager capable of resolving less than 0.5 degrees/color, note where the hotter

spots are located on the emitter plate.

4. For any location except row 1 (top), incrementally turn the respective trimmer for that

location CCW direction and wait for the result on the image.

5. Continue at each location except row 1 as required until the desired uniformity is achieved.
6. If above fails because the bottom may require more heat than the top, slowly turn row 1

(top) CCW and wait for result. This time, the plate temperature will change since power has
been reduced to the region the RTD is using. Now the controller will compensate by

increasing power that will raise the surrounding region temperatures.

Note: Never set the top (no. 1) trimmer to more than 1/2 turn from CW (trimmer
shaft slot at vertical position) as this will waste power and limit the ability of the
blackbody to reach the full temperature range. Usually, 1/4 turn is more than
enough to balance nearly all of the sections.

7. If the trimmer adjustments seem to require more than 1/2 turn to balance, set all trimmers

to CW and start over.
