C Continuous Access Journal configurations with Business

Copy

Continuous Access Journal and Business Copy can share the same data volumes to provide multiple
copies of data, at both the primary and secondary sites.
This chapter provides configurations and information for using Business Copy with Continuous
Access Journal. For details about Business Copy, see HP P9000 Business Copy User Guide.

Overview

Continuous Access Journal’s main function is to maintain a copy of the production volume in a
remote location. Backing up the local and/or remote Continuous Access Journal volumes with
Business Copy, or backing up the Business Copy volumes with Continuous Access Journal, provides
additional advantages.

When sharing the primary volume with Business Copy:

Onsite data backup is provided in case of a Continuous Access Journal failure.

Multiple copies of production data are provided on the local site for secondary purposes,
such as data analysis, testing and so on.

Sharing the Business Copy secondary volume with the Continuous Access Journal primary
volume on the local site provides a remote copy.

When Business Copy is cascaded on the remote side, data in the Business Copy secondary
volume can be used for testing the Continuous Access Journal system and for recovery purposes.

The Business Copy secondary volume is available for continuous replication during a test.

If a Continuous Access Journal problem is encountered during an actual recovery
procedure, the Business Copy secondary volume provides a golden copy of the Continuous
Access Journal secondary volume, which can be used to restore the Continuous Access
Journal secondary volume.

NOTE:

Any request to split all Business Copy pairs in one consistency group will be accepted

only when the corresponding Continuous Access Journal pairs are in PAIR, PSUS, or PSUE status.
If any of the Continuous Access Journal pairs is in another status, the status of the Business Copy
pairs in the consistency group will remain unchanged.

Continuous Access Journal data volumes are shared with Business Copy volumes in specific
configurations. The following sections discuss these supported configurations.

Configurations with Business Copy primary volumes

A Business Copy primary volume can be shared with a Continuous Access Journal primary volume
or secondary volume.

A Business Copy primary volume shared with the Continuous Access Journal primary volume
is illustrated below. This configuration allows you to use Business Copy for onsite data backup
in case of a Continuous Access Journal failure, and to use Continuous Access Journal to provide
remote backup of the Business Copy primary volume in case of a Business Copy failure.
