installation procedure. ADS strongly recommends holding the SIM
with a small pair of needle-nose pliers while inserting it into the
modem. However, be very careful to avoid contacting or denting
the copper contacts on the card with the pliers. In addition, pay
special attention to the corner bevel on the SIM card, as shown in the
installation procedure.
Unit Activation
After installing the SIM, power up the unit and check the wireless
signal strength in the following way:
1. Connect the antenna and position it next to a window or wall.
2. Connect the backup battery to the BATT receptacle (not
required for this test).
3. Connect the power supply (i.e., charger or AC Adapter) to the
CHG receptacle.
4. Plug the power supply into a wall outlet.
5. Wait a minute for the wireless modem to log onto AT&T and
display the percent signal strength.
Network and Email Setup Screen Configuration
After verifying a good signal strength (25% or more), establish
communication with the Spider using a laptop and Ethernet crossover
cable to setup network and Email parameters (refer to the screen
shots below). Once these parameters are setup, refer to the Remote
Access Procedure to establish communication with the unit over the
Internet. If the Spider is not using a SIM with a static IP address,
follow the instructions included in Appendix H: Testing E-mail
Connectivity on page 106.
