Chapter 3. Configure Tape Pools

Virtual tapes are stored by the VI-5990 into tape pools. A tape pool, also sometimes
referred to as a tape rack is where a group of tapes are stored. Usually, the tapes stored in
the pool have a few common characteristics which may include how they are handled
(retention time, whether they are to be replicated, encrypted, managed, etc.), how the
tapes are named (VOLSER naming), and where they are physically stored.

Each host LPAR has access to one or more tape pools. One tape pool must be assigned to
each LPAR as a default pool. Tape pools may be shared by more than one LPAR. A
minimum of one tape pool is required. Each tape pool must be configured for several
options. These include:

 Default Pool Name Option
 Physical Directory Associated to the Pool

 Scratch Rule

 Tape Retention Time
 Tape Manager in Use (if any)

 Scratch Report File Name

To define Tape Pools, select the [Tape Pools] button from the main configuration menu.
