13.9.1

Preparing for VLAN Configuration

A little forethought and planning is essential to a good VLAN implementation. Before attempting
to configure a single switch for VLAN operation, consider the following:

How many VLANs will be required?

What stations will belong to them?

What ports are connected to those stations?

What ports will be configured as GARP-aware ports?

Will Per VLAN Spanning Tree or Quick Convergence Spanning Tree be used?

It may also be helpful to sketch out a diagram of your VLAN strategy. The examples provided
starting with

Section 13.11

may be useful for a depiction of the planning process.

Section 13.10

provides a quick walkthrough on how to use the screens to configure the switch for VLANs.
