ENGINE PROBLEMS

Engine Will Not

Start

Possible Cause

Correction

1. HR215HMA electric

starting: Check battery

and fuse.

Battery discharged.

Recharge battery (p. 65)

Fuse burnt out.

Replace fuse (p. 69).

2. Check control positions. Fuel valve OFF.

Turn fuel valve ON (p.12)

Throttle lever in wrong

position.

Move throttle lever to

CHOKE position, unless

the engine is warm (p. 29).

HR215HMA only: engine

switch OFF.

Engine switch must be ON

to use recoil starter (p. 30).

3. Check fuel.

Out of fuel.

Refuel (p. 21).

Bad fuel; mower stored

without treating or

draining gasoline, or

refueled with bad gas.

Drain fuel tank and

carburetor (p. 75).

Refuel with fresh

gasoline (p. 21).

4. Remove and inspect

spark plug.

Spark plug faulty, fouled,

or improperly gapped.

Clean, gap, or replace

spark plug (p. 53).

Spark plug wet with

fuel (flooded engine).

Dry and reinstall spark plug.

Start engine with throttle

lever in FAST position.

5. Take mower to an

authorized Honda

servicing dealer, or refer

to shop manual.

Fuel filter clogged,

carburetor malfunction,

ignition malfunction,

valves stuck, etc.

Replace or repair faulty

components as necessary.

Loss of Power

Possible Cause

Correction

1. Check throttle position.

Throttle not set to FAST.

Move throttle to FAST (p. 31)

2. Check grass height.

Grass too tall to cut.

Raise cutting height (p.16),

cut narrower swath (p.37),

or cut more frequently.

3. Check under mower

deck.

Mower deck clogged.

Clean out mower deck

(p. 38).

4. Check air filters.

Air filters clogged.

Clean or replace air

filters (p. 51).

5. Check fuel.

Bad fuel; mower stored

without treating or

draining gasoline, or

refueled with bad gas.

Drain fuel tank and

carburetor (p. 75).

Refuel with fresh

gasoline (p. 21).

6. Take mower to an

authorized Honda

servicing dealer, or refer

to shop manual.

Fuel filter clogged,

carburetor malfunction,

ignition malfunction,

valves stuck, etc.

Replace or repair faulty

components as necessary.
