Appendix B: SNTP Basics


SNTP is an acronym for Simple Network Time Protocol. SNTP is widely used to
synchronize time on computers. Certain computers within a LAN or on the internet have the
responsibility of maintaining accurate time in order to provide a time standard for the
network. Your network administrator should be able to direct you to an appropriate local
time server for your environment.

The OnTime Digital Clock must be configured with the network location of a time server.
The default time server is an internet time server operated by Inova.

Periodically, a computer transmits a time query in order to synchronize its time with a time
server. Every two hours the OnTime Digital Clock transmits a time query to the time server
and the time server replies. With the reply in hand, the clock calculates the time offset, or
correction, that it needs to apply to its current time and then makes the update.

In the event that the time server does not reply, the OnTime Digital Clock continues to
display time while it retries the time server. After repeated unsuccessful tries, the clock
illuminates its Service Light (an LED dot at the lower right-hand side of the clock), indicating
that the displayed time is no longer synchronized.
