How Remote Copy uses receiving links

Remote Copy links are divided into two main types: sending links and receiving links.

You create sending links during Remote Copy setup (using the creatercopytarget or
admitrcopylink

command).

For more information, see

“Setting Up a Unidirectional Configuration” (page 67)

.

When you create a sending link, Remote Copy automatically creates a receiving link on that
node.

Sending Links

Remote Copy uses sending links to transmit data from a system to its Remote Copy target system
(the other system in the Remote Copy pair).

When you create target definitions for a system during setup, you define one set of sending
links per target system.

For redundancy, be sure to configure more than one communication link between the two
storage systems in each Remote Copy pair.

RCFC supports two links, RCIP supports up to four links.

When all links between two systems are active, all links carry data.

In other words, Remote Copy sends the data for one I/O over a single link, but can send the
data for another I/O over another link. This versatility is especially useful when you are copying
multiple volumes.

For each configured IP interface, Remote Copy uses TCP port 5785 to transmit data and
commands from the primary system over the sending link to the backup system.

One Link per Node per Target

You can configure one sending link per node per target system.

For example, if you have a System1/System2 Remote Copy pair, each with nodes x and y
[

Figure 32 (page 185)

], you can configure two sending links either:

from node x1 to node x2 and from node y1 to node y2, or

from node x1 to node y2 and from node y1 to node x2

However, Remote Copy does not support multiple sending links per node. In other words, you
cannot configure node x1 with sending links to both nodes x2 and y2.
