What is Oil Canning?
Oil canning is a waviness that may occur in flat areas
of light gauge, formed metal products. Structural
integrity is normally not affected by this inherent
characteristic and therefore is only an aesthetic issue.
Things to Expect
• Heat will increase oil canning, so high
temperatures are often a factor when
waviness occurs.
• Changes in light — including overcast days,
shade, and intense sunlight — can affect the
appearance of oil canning. Oil canning will
seem less prominent in the shade, since there
is less light reflecting off the waves. It will
be more noticeable in brighter light.
• The color of the metal panel can also affect
the appearance of oil canning. For example,
oil canning is more evident on galvalume than
on color panels.
• Often, oil canning is apparent only at a close
distance. Farther away, it may not be perceptible.
1. Before placing panel on the roof, flip panel
over being careful not to scratch the paint
on the next panel in the stack.
2. Locate the center of the pan of the
roofing panel.
3. Apply foam down the center of the pan,
starting 3’ from the top of the panel and
stopping 3’ from the bottom of the panel.
The purpose of this application is to reduce the effects of oil canning on the Mueller AP panels. It will not completely
eliminate oil canning on these panels. The foam must be applied down the center of every pan. AP will have two
applications per sheet.
