A font is a collection of letters, numbers, and symbols in a distinctive
typographic design. Your Mac OS–based computer and LaserWriter 12/640
PS printer come with a variety of fonts that look great both on your monitor
and on paper.
Fonts come in such a variety of formats that problems can sometimes arise.
This appendix provides the information you need to avoid such problems and
to solve them if they come up.
Kinds of fonts
The Mac OS–based computer works with three main kinds of fonts:
bitmapped, PostScript, and TrueType fonts.
Apple provides two kinds of fonts with your Mac OS–based computer and
the LaserWriter 12/640 PS printer, bitmapped and TrueType. However,
your system can use PostScript fonts as well when it has the proper
software installed.
