6. TYPICAL OPERATION

6. TYPICAL OPERATION

This section suggest ways to get the most out of your Model 1788A. Let these ideas
serve as inspiration more than instruction. The 1788A is flexible enough to fill many
requirements we have not illustrated and probably haven’t even thought of.

6.1 BYPASSING A CONSOLE’S MICROPHONE PREAMPLIFIERS

Console mic preamps are not always top rate. They tend to be of minimal quality for the
sake of economical production. Using the 1788A as a front end to your console can give
you great benefits. Of course, this is especially true when you avail yourself of the remote
control capability and place the preamps at front-of-house or off-stage, close to the mics
themselves.

USING LINE -vs- MIC INPUTS

Some consoles are equipped with separate mic and line level inputs, but you should
check the manual for your console to assure that the line input does indeed bypass the
microphone preamp stage. Many consoles route the line input through a loss pad right
into the mic preamp. In such a case, you will still hear the deficiencies of the console
preamps, and not be able to realize the full sonic value of the 1788A.

SAVED BY THE INSERT JACK

If your console does not have separate line inputs, but does have “Insert” jacks, you can
use these to bring in the audio from the Model 1788A and reap the sonic benefits. Console
channel inserts with a “send” and “return” allow you to interrupt the signal path following
the input gain stage to introduce signal processing or effects. On some consoles, there
are separate connectors for send and return. If this is the case with your console, simply
connect the Model 1788A’s output(s) to the Return jack(s).
