6. TYPICAL OPERATION

NOTE: You may run into issues of balanced and unbalanced inserts. The 1788A can
drive both types just as easily. You can refer to this manual’s appendix on proper wiring
to get information on how to match the 1788A’s Main and Aux Outputs to balanced
and unbalanced inputs (there is a difference between Main and Aux unbalanced

wiring).
On many consoles, particularly lower priced units, the inserts are a single 3-contact 1/4”
TRS phone jack on which the sleeve is ground and the other two contacts are send and
return. In this case, it will be necessary to configure the 1788A’s output as unbalanced
and fabricate the correct adapter cable. Refer to your console’s user manual to determine
which TRS contact (tip or ring) is the return. Your cables should be configured so that the
Model 1788A’s output feeds the return circuit without shorting or disturbing the send.

NOTE: You should adjust the 1788A’s Main or Aux Output to match the maximum
input level of the console. This will guarantee the absolute best signal to noise ratio
and protection from clipping that is afforded by MicLim.

6.2 DIRECT TRACKING

When in the initial tracking phase of the
recording process, often the signal fed to
the individual recorder tracks is kept pure
and natural. Effects and processing are
added later, during the mix-down process.
In this situation, you can bypass the
mixing console altogether by connecting
the Model 1788A’s outputs directly to
the designated inputs on the recorder. By
shortening the distance of the signal path,
and eliminating unnecessary electronic
circuitry and connectors, you will likely
realize the best possible performance from
the Model 1788A. The accompanying
illustration demonstrates the simplicity of
this configuration. You can monitor the
recording by simply routing the additional
outputs provided on the Model 1788A
to either the console’s Tape Return or
individual channel inputs.
The multiple analog outputs of the Model
1788A makes it possible to use both the
eight main analog outputs and the analog
DB-25 output simultaneously, creating
a split. For instance, use the eight XLR
type connections to bypass your console’s
microphone preamplifiers as described in
the previous section. Then use the analog
DB-25 connector to feed all eight channels
to a recorder. If you have opted for the
