The Nexto Video Storage is sometimes delivered with a hard drive installed. If a drive is not
included, or if the drive fails, or if you wish to install another hard drive, you may do so. You
need a 2.5" Serial ATA hard drive; its installation height must not exceed 9.5mm. Supported
hard drive capacity is up to 2,000GB.

Nexto Video Storage does not support PATA or IDE hard drives.

13. Installing and Formatting a Hard Drive

Disconnect all cables from the case.

Remove the cover on the lower side.

Insert a 2.5" SATA hard drive.

The protective film must be placed between
circuit board and hard drive.

Make sure that the pins of the hard drive are

inserted exactly in the socket board inside
the case.

Put the cover on again. Make sure to observe the

correct orientation; the larger foam insert on the
inside of the cover faces in the direction of the
power socket/USB port.

Fasten the cover via the four small screws;

a suitable screwdriver is included.

The hard drive must then be formatted.

Formatting the Hard Drive

The hard drive in the Nexto Video Storage must be formatted as file system "FAT32". Only
one (or the first) partition can be used. With Windows XP, hard drives and partitions are
formatted (with a size of more than 32GB) only with the file system "NTFS"; no “FAT32”
format option is available. For Mac OS, hard drives are formatted with the file system HFS+
(Mac OS Extended).

If you are installing a 60Gbyte hard drive and creating and formatting a partition
via the operating system "Windows XP”, the file system "NTFS" will be installed.
Via USB2.0, the hard drive in the Nexto Video Storage can be used like a
conventional external hard drive. If the Nexto Video Storage is disconnected
from the computer and you want to copy the data from a memory card onto the
hard drive, then this is not possible. The Nexto Video Storage can work with one
partition in the file format "FAT32" only. Therefore, Nexto Video Storage offers
its own possibility of formatting the hard drive in the file system "FAT32".

To Format a New Hard Drive

The Nexto Video Storage must not be connected to the computer via USB or eSATA. Remove
any memory cards or USB devices from the Nexto Video Storage.
● When the Nexto Video Storage is turned on after installing a new hard drive, an error
message appears ("Disk Format Error"), indicating that the drive is not formatted (new hard
drives are usually delivered non-partitioned and non-formatted).
● Press the control key for more than one second ("L format"); Nexto Video Storage will format
the new hard drive; the available space on the hard drive is formatted as one partition in the
FAT32 Format.
