of the total amount is produced between 290 and 300 nm. The most

accurate readings of vitamin D3 photosynthesis are given by the

Solarmeter 6.4 Vitamine D3 IU per Minute, because this meter uses

the above described D3 Yield Index, and therefore calculates positive

against negative UVB, takes peak performance into account, and

then shows the actual outcome on useful UV-rays that promote the

photosynthesis of Vitamine D3. Deficiency of Vitamin D3 can result

in insufficient calcium levels which in turn can lead to reproductive

failure and health problems like rickets, osteomalacia and nutritional

metabolic bone disease. Reptiles that are kept in captivity and do not

have access to natural sunlight should be exposed to a source of UVB

to avoid Vitamin D3-related diseases.

on the fixture.

MAINTENANCE
UV radiation slowly decreases over time
To assure that your

animals continuously receive the right amount of UV, we recommend

to replace the Exo Terra

®

SunRay bulbs every 12 months. Subscribe

to our “Restore the Rays” program on www.exo-terra.com to receive

a reminder when your Exo Terra

®

SunRay bulb needs to be replaced.

RECYCLING

This item bears the selective sorting symbol for waste

electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE). This means

that the product must be handled pursuant to European

Directive 2002/96/EC in order to be recycled or

dismantled to minimise it’s impact on the environment.

For further information please contact your local or regional

Authorities. Electronic products not included in the selective sorting

process are potentially dangerous for the environment and human

health due to the prescence of hazardous substances.

supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance.

5. To avoid injury, do not contact hot parts, allow to cool down

before handling.

6. Do not use the bulb for other than intended use. The use of

attachments not recommended or sold by the bulb manufacturer

may cause an unsafe condition.

7. The Exo Terra

®

SunRay Bulb emits UV and was designed strictly

for use with reptiles. It should be operated in a way that humans

are never exposed to UV. Before handling the bulb, and to avoid

exposing yourself to the light emitted by the bulb, switch off the

bulb and let it cool down. Always use the bulb in conjunction with

a dome that was specifically designed for use with Metal Halide

Bulbs (Exo Terra

®

SunRay Fixture), so you will not be exposed to

UV-radiation.

8. Never look directly into the bulb.

9. The safety of this bulb is guaranteed only provided that the bulb,

adaptor, and light unit are properly installed.

10. Do not use more than one bulb on one ballast.

11. Damaged bulbs or bulbs that do not function properly have to be

removed immediately.

12. Provide sufficient ventilation. Never cover the bulb or ballast.

13. Never install the bulb near flammable objects.

14. The housing of this bulb may only be opened by authorized

personnel or by the manufacturer.

15. Switch off the bulb before performing any maintenance of any kind

in the terrarium.

16. Disconnect the plug of the light unit, and any other electrical

equipment, used for the terrarium, paludarium or aqua-terrarium

before placing your hands in the water; and/or performing any

maintenance of any kind.

17. Whenever installing, removing, changing or maintaining bulbs

always ensure that the device is unplugged.

• This equipment is FOR INDOOR USE ONLY.

• Warning: Disconnect the plug of the fixture, and any other electrical

equipment, used for the terrarium, paludarium or aqua-terrarium

before performing any maintenance of any kind.

• Warning: Whenever installing, removing, changing or maintaining

Exo Terra

®

SunRay bulbs always ensure that the fixture is

unplugged.

• The Exo Terra

®

SunRay bulb should only be operated with a suitable

ballast and fixture (e.g. Exo Terra

®

SunRay fixture).

• After switching the bulb on, it needs about 5-7 minutes to achieve

full brightness. When switched of, the bulb has to cool down for

about 10 minutes before it can be started again.

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.

Only the faithful observation of these installation, electrical and

maintenance guidelines will ensure the safe and efficient use of

this appliance.

UV INFORMATION
The most important advantage of UVB is its contribution to the

production of Vitamin D3. An important note here is that the

wavelengths within the UVB band are not equally efficient in the

production of previtamin D3. At 298 nm, the best conversion results

are obtained. The wavelengths on both sides of this maximum

become progressively less efficient in producing previtamin D3. 60%
