Still Store Image File Format

Introduction

This document describes the file formats used by the Kalypso Classic and
Zodiak system still stores, and by the Kalypso HD/Duo system still stores.
Experienced developers should be able to utilize this information to write
applications that convert images and animations to and from the Kalypso
and Zodiak production switcher systems.

Still Store Hardware

The Kalypso Classic and Zodiak systems support SD formats (525 and 625
lines). The still store hardware supplied with these systems supports only
those two formats.

The Kalypso HD system since software version 10.0 supports either HD
formats (1080i and 720p) or SD formats (525 and 625 lines). The Kalypso
Duo system uses the same hardware, but is restricted to operating in only
the SD modes. The Kalypso HD and Duo systems store and retrieve SD still
store images of 525 and 625 lines in the same format as documented for the
Kalypso Classic and Zodiak still store.

Image Storage Mechanism

Kalypso Classic and Zodiak system still store video (and key) data con-
forms to CCIR 601 specifications, but is packed in a particular order that
matches the still store hardware memory organization. While many
graphics applications can create CCIR 601 video data, none pack data in the
order expected by the still store.

The Kalypso HD system still store video (and key) data conforms to SMPTE
274M (1920x1080, including 1080I@ 30Hz, 29.9Hz, 25Hz) and SMPTE 296M
(1280x720, including 720P @ 59.9Hz and 60Hz). The above considerations
regarding data packing order also applies to HD images.
