6.7 | Firewall
The Wireless Cable Modem Gateway provides a stateful inspection firewall (SPI), which is

designed to protect against Denial of Service (DoS) attacks when activated. Its purpose is to
allow a private local area network (LAN) to be securely connected to the Internet. To provide a

flexible solution, the firewall section has the following features:

6.7.1 | Access Control
Access Control allows users to block access to users on your network from the Internet. Access

Rules can be configured to a specific LAN IP Address or a range of LAN IP Address’s.

To access the Access Control configuration page, on the Side Navigation bar, click on [Firewall]
link and then click on the [Access Control] link.

To enable this feature, check the [Enable Filtering] checkbox.

From this section, you can also choose to have the Wireless Cable Modem Gateway to [Respond

to Ping on Internet WAN Port]. If you check this option, the Gateway will respond to PING
requests to the WAN IP address. By Default this option is disabled, so the Wireless Cable
Modem Gateway will NOT respond to PING requests from the WAN side.

For convenience, the Wireless Cable Modem Gateway includes 2 filtering options:

• Predefined Filtering
• Customer Defined Filtering

Steps to configure both types of these Access Rules are outlined below:
