5. Remove the pinion mate shaft lock pin, and

use a punch to remove the pinion mate shaft
(Figures 59 and 60).

Install the spreader with a load to hold the
side gears in place (Figure 61).

6. Inspect the holes in the case where the shaft

was removed. The two holes must be round
and not oblong.

NOTE: If they are oblong, the case is damaged
and must be replaced. Use the side gear
spreader to hold the side gears while the pinion
mates and thrust washers are removed. If this is
too tight the case will not turn.

8. Use a yoke holder to turn the case so the

pinion mate gears and thrust washers can be
removed (Figure 62). Take the case off the
splined shaft and remove the side gear
spreader. Remove the side gears and thrust
washers.
