data cartridge compatibility

The following data cartridges can be used for all normal read/write operations:

A new blank DLTtape IV cartridge. The part number for the HP DLTtape IV
cartridge is C5141F. See

ordering supplies

.

A DLTtape IV cartridge that has been previously written in a DLT VS80 or
DLT1 tape drive

Do not use DLTtape III cartridges.

cartridges previously used in other dlt format drives

If DLTtape IV data cartridges have been previously used in other DLT format tape
drives (other than DLT VS80 or DLT1 tape drives) then they have a reduced
compatibility when used with your DLT VS80 tape drive as shown by the table
below:

In each case, a data cartridge previously used on a DLT 4000, DLT 7000, DLT 8000 or

SDLT tape drive must be bulk erased (magnetically erased) before data can by written to

it by a DLT VS80 tape drive

Note: The term DLT format tape drive refers collectively to the DLT1, DLT VS80,
SDLT, DLT 4000, DLT 7000 and DLT 8000. HP also refers to these last three
drives as DLT 40, DLT 70 and DLT 80 respectively.

subsequent use in other dlt format drives

Once a DLTIV data cartridge has been used in your DLT VS80 tape drive it has
full compatibility if subsequently used in a DLT1 (or another DLT VS80) tape drive.
However, if subsequent used in other DLT format tape drives then they have a
reduced compatibility as shown by the table below:

cleaning cartridges

The DLT VS80 tape drive requires a DLT VS or a DLT1 cleaning cartridge, both of
which are light brown in color. Do not use other DLT format cleaning cartridges -
these are cream in color.

Correct cleaning cartridges will take 90 seconds to clean the drive, and will
activate both the ready and media/clean lights. Unsupported cleaning cartridges
will be ejected by the DLT VS80 tape drive after 20 seconds, and will only cause
the ready light to flash.

DLT VS80 drives have been developed to have a minimal cleaning requirement
(see

cleaning

). The CLEAN/MEDIA LED on the tape drive front panel will flash

when the drive needs cleaning. Under typical conditions, the drive should seldom
require cleaning. However, high duty cycles and environmental conditions may
require the drive to be cleaned on a regular basis to ensure optimum performance
is maintained, and it is therefore considered good practice to clean the drive
approximately every two weeks.

DLT VS or DLT1 cleaning cartridges can clean the drive 20 times before they
need replacing. The part number for the DLT VS cleaning cartridge is C7998A.
