Troubleshooting common Macintosh problems 111

USB problems

A USB-connected
HP LaserJet printer does not
appear in the Macintosh
Chooser.

This problem is caused by
either a software or
hardware component.

Software troubleshooting

Make sure that your Macintosh
computer supports USB.

Make sure that your Macintosh
computer has Mac OS 8.6 or later.

Ensure that your Macintosh has the
appropriate USB software from Apple.

Note: The iMac and Blue G3 desktop
Macintosh systems contain all the
requirements to connect to a USB device.

Hardware troubleshooting

Make sure that the printer is turned on.

Verify that the USB cable is properly
connected.

Make sure that you are using the
appropriate high-speed USB cable.

Make sure that there are not too many
USB devices drawing power from the
chain. Disconnect all devices from the
chain and connect the cable directly to
the USB port on the host computer.

Check to see if there are more than two
non-powered USB hubs in a row on the
chain. Disconnect all devices from the
chain and connect the cable directly to
the USB port on the host computer.

Note: The iMac keyboard is a non-powered
USB hub.

The LaserWriter driver does
not display USB devices in
the Chooser.

Use the Apple Desktop Utility to set up the
printer.
