Sharing volumes with Thin Provisioning and Smart Tiers

You can share BC P-VOLs and S-VOLs with THP and Smart Tiers (Smart) volumes.

If you are using an THP volume as an BC P-VOL or S-VOL, the capacity of the THP pool allocated
to the volume is added to the BC licensed capacity. THP volumes are not updated in real time and
therefore some write requests can cause excess data. This excess data is saved in the pool.

Restrictions

The following restrictions apply:

Share the THP and Smart volumes with both the BC P-VOL and S-VOLs, rather than one or the
other.

If you share a THP or Smart volume with only the P-VOL or only the S-VOL, you cannot Quick
Restore. The S-VOL consumes the same amount of the pool capacity as the P-VOL.

If you plan to Quick Restore, you must share the P-VOL and the S-VOLs with THP or Smart
volumes.

You cannot perform BC pair tasks while:

Increasing THP volume capacity.

Initializing the DP pool.

The maximum size of a THP or Smart volume that you can use as an BC P-VOL or S-VOL is 4
TB (4398046511104 bytes).

NOTE:

You must use the block specification for BC volumes shared with THP or Smart. You

cannot use TB, GB, or MB. For example, the block-size equivalent of a 4 TB P-VOL or S-VOL
is 8589934592 blocks.

To prevent interrupting the zero-page data-reclaiming task, run the following RAID Manager
commands to create or resynchronize BC/SS pairs and reclaim zero pages separately:

Paircreate

pairresync

If you create an BC/SS pair during WriteSame or Unmap command processing, the pair
creation might fail. In this case, create the pair again after the WriteSame or Unmap command
processing finishes.

Sharing volumes with LUN Manager

LUN Manager tasks do not affect BC tasks. You can assign volumes that are under secure ports
and/or that are assigned to World Wide Name (WWN) groups and/or LUN groups to BC pairs.
You can also use volumes that are assigned to BC pairs in LUN Manager tasks, such as assignment
to WWN groups and/or LUN groups.
