5 Pair operations

This chapter provides instructions for performing pair operations.

Pair operations

You can perform the following operations on pairs:

“Checking the pair status” (page 35)

.

“Pair creation” (page 35)

. The V-VOL becomes a virtual duplicate of the PVOL.

“Pair split” (page 40)

A point-in-time snapshot of the P-VOL is established in the V-VOL, allowing

another software applications to use the V-VOL.

“Pair resynchronization and restoration ” (page 42)

. SS data is discarded and the V-VOL is

again a virtual copy of the P-VOL.

“Pair deletion” (page 42)

. The pair relationship between the pair volumes is ended.

Checking the pair status

Each pair operation requires a pair to have a specific status. Check the pair status before performing
a pair operation and to ensure that an operation completes successfully.

For more information about checking pair status, see

“Monitoring the storage system” (page 44)

.

For the more information about the statuses that are required for specific operations, see

“Pair

status definitions” (page 44)

.

Pair creation workflow

Use the following workflow to create a pair:

1.

(If you are sharing SS P-VOLs with other HP software application volumes and you want to
use the volumes to create the SS pair) Set the access attributes using the RWC Data Ret.

For more information about setting access attributes, see

“Data Retention and access attributes”

(page 28)

.

2.

Create the data pool.

For more information about creating data pools, see

“Creating data pools” (page 23)

.

3.

Create the V-VOL for the pair.

For more information about creating V-VOLs, see

“Creating V-VOLs” (page 24)

.

4.

Check the pair status.

For more information about checking the pair status, see

“Checking the pair status” (page 35)

.

5.

Do the following:

If you are creating pairs with different numbers of S-VOLs, configure the pairs.

For more information about configuring pairs, see

“Configuring pairs” (page 36)

.

If you are creating pairs with the same number of S-VOLs, create the pairs.

For more information, see

“Creating pairs” (page 37)

.

Pair creation

When you create a pair, the V-VOL becomes a virtual copy of the P-VOL. Updates you make to
the P-VOL are reflected in the V-VOL until you split the pair.
