Eco-Friendly Air Conditioning Technology

Liebherr-Transportation Systems

offers a cutting-edge eco-friendly air
cycle technology for rail vehicle air
conditioning applications. Being based
on air as refrigerant, this technology
allows to avoid chemical refrigerants.
Liebherr’s air cycle system has already
been in daily operation on European
high speed trains since five years.

The system for application in rail

vehicles is compliant to all common
passenger comfort requirements, such
as UIC 553, EN13129 and EN14750
and – as a real alternative to chemical
refrigerants – helps to reduce green-
house warming impact according to
worldwide HFC regulations. As the sys-
tem does not use any other refrigerant
than air, there is no risk of refrigerant
leakage, and the compliance with any
future legislation regarding refrigerants
in air conditioning systems is absolute
and unlimited.

While the cooling power of closed

loop vapour cycle systems can be re-
duced by high outside temperatures,
the air cycle system is not influenced
by outside temperatures. It permits
to continue operation even under ex-
tremely severe external conditions. The

open loop process offers the largest
possible resistance to defects and the
highest reliability. Furthermore closed
loop vapour cycle systems unlike air
cycle systems can suffer from leaking
which significantly reduces their cool-
ing capacity.

The Liebherr air cycle air condition-

ing systems are highly reliable also
due to their reduced number of com-
ponents. Each system consists of five
main components only, which also
contributes to a minimized failure po-
tential.

In addition, Liebherr’s air cycle tech-

nology features significantly reduced
life cycle costs compared to common
vapour cycle systems. Life cycle costs
of common systems consist not only
of direct maintenance on the system,
unscheduled vehicle downtime due to
system failure, spare part administra-
tion and power consumption, but also
of additional operating costs related to
the refrigerant circuit generated by re-
frigerant handling and disposal, retrofit
of refrigerant in order to comply with
future regulations or refrigerant empty-
ing and refilling times.
