Liebherr Customer Care for
UK Railway Operators
Liebherr-Transportation Systems
offers service packages for the en-
tire product range and for custom-
ers worldwide, including whole life
fixed price arrangements. Since 2001
Liebherr has been contracted by UK
railway operators to provide a total
care service package for the Liebherr
Heating Ventilation and Air Condition-
ing (HVAC) systems fitted to the Class
158 Express Sprinter diesel multiple
unit train fleet.
The HVAC systems were not only
designed and built by Liebherr, but
in some cases also installed into the
trains by Liebherr’s engineers. In the
field of customer service Liebherr engi-
neers interface daily with the operators
to ensure the comfort of passengers.
The service contract is carried out
for a fixed monthly cost per train in
service, and can be adjusted in a com-
pletely flexible way in case of changes
to fleet usage. It comprises all routine
maintenance, supply of all consumable
spares and of strategic stocks of casu-
alty spares, repair manpower on call-
out basis with a fixed response time, a
24 hours / 365 days per year dedicated
number service hotline manned by spe-
cialist technicians, detailed reporting
with key performance indicators and
targeted enhancements, offsite over-
haul at a Liebherr workshop as well as
obsolescence management.
Effectively a “one stop shop” for
all HVAC maintenance needs
To carry out routine maintenance
Liebherr engineers require access to
customer vehicles, which is arranged
by direct contact with the operator at
depot level.
Liebherr’s experienced engineers
are trained and certified to carry out
on-site work. Their fully-equipped ser-
vice van fleet ensures their mobility, to
bring the service to the train as and
where it is needed.
Consumable spares are supplied on
a call-off or just-in-time basis, accord-
ing to the specific needs and to the in-
stalled systems of each maintenance
depot. Casualty spares are stocked
both centrally and locally as circum-
stances and events demand. Parts are
available whenever and wherever re-
quired.
Liebherr treats every customer call-
out as an emergency, being aware that
rapid response is of critical importance.
Liebherr service engineers also build
relationships directly at depot level
with the customers staff, which is of
great benefit in meeting what can be
demanding timescales.
The Liebherr service hotline for British
Rail is a single number which is manned
each and every day by skilled UK-based
technicians. This service of course can-
not guarantee to solve every issue over
the phone, but does guarantee effective
service and a rapid response.
Another important part of Liebherr-
Transportation Systems’ total care ser-
vice package is the open and regular
reporting and the use of Reliability Cen-
tred Maintenance (RCM) techniques. A
full and detailed bulletin is issued every
month detailing all work carried out, ex-
ceptions, concerns and issues arising.
It also contains up-to-date statistics on
reliability records and suggestions for
future improvements.

Systems supplies additional air con-
ditioning systems to operator Virgin for
the British West Coast main line, for in-
stallation on 53 existing and four com-
plete new trains.
For the ET430 trains to oper-
ate on the Stuttgart, Germany, urban
rapid transit network, Liebherr received
an order to supply air conditioning
equipment for the driver’s cabs and
passenger areas.
A follow-up order for Liebherr
was received from Bombardier to sup-
ply air conditioning equipment for 99
trams as part of the “Tram Flexity Ber-
lin” project.
For Slovak Railways (ŽSR),
Liebherr-Transportation Systems will
supply air conditioning systems for 20
saloon coaches and twelve three-car
diesel multiple units.
