The Project DPZ+ team

In 2009 the Swiss Federal Railways

(SBB) decided to extensively modern-
ize the first-generation rolling stock of
Zurich’s double-deck push-pull com-
muter trains (DPZ). The decision was
based on existing passenger needs,
as well as the necessity to comply
with changes in Swiss legislation and
to cope with increasing operational
requirements. The vehicles are on av-
erage 15 years old. Modernization will
extend the life of the present fleet by 25
years. A new air conditioning system
was included in the scheme as the cur-
rent double-deck cars no longer meet
the expected standard of temperature-
controlled comfort.

The tender submitted by Liebherr-

Transportation Systems was selected
on the basis of its technical and eco-
nomic attributes and the company’s
experience in comparable projects.

A total of 238 DPZ cars are being fit-

ted with new air conditioning systems by

Liebherr. They include 115 type AB cars,
eight type B cars and 115 type Bt cars.

Each air conditioning system con-

sists of two air conditioning units,
nozzle ventilation grilles (outside and
outgoing air openings), outgoing air
duct systems, outgoing air fans and
roof hood, two sets of mating connec-
tors for the air conditioning units, which
integrate all electrical switch elements
in a separate switch panel, an air con-
ditioning control system with MMI con-
sisting of a control and display termi-
nal, CO

sensors as well as ambient-air

temperature sensors.

To reduce energy consumption,

Liebherr-Transportation Systems is
using heat pumps for the first time in
this project. Their effectiveness has
already been tested in advance on a
laboratory prototype. In combination
with the speed-regulated screw com-
pressor and the CO

2

sensor they can

be expected to yield a considerable

energy saving in train operation.

Under the current delivery schedule

the first pre-series trains (two type AB
and two type Bt cars) will be handed
over at the end of 2011. The first air
conditioning equipment set will be sup-

plied by the end of January 2011. Se-
ries delivery will start as from the first
quarter 2012 and continue until 2017.
