New Gas Engine Model Series

The Liebherr G946 6-cylinder in-line
engine is the first model of a new gas
engine series. This 12-liter engine − a
Liebherr in-house development specially
designed for stationary use − has a pow-

Many features of the successful Liebherr
diesel engines were adapted for the gas
engines. These include, for example, the
steel pistons and the use of four valves
per cylinder, which increase air volume
flow and minimize pressure losses. This
allows high ignition pressures and, as a
result, yields a high engine power density
as well as a high efficiency of over 41 %.

The range of Liebherr gas engines will
comprise the same spectrum as the
Liebherr diesel engines, that is from the
4-cylinder engine to the 12-cylinder en-
gine. The product program will cover a
performance range of 143 hp to 722 hp
(105 kW to 531 kW).

Setting the Standard:
Introducing the New Liebherr T 284 Mining Truck

Millions of operating hours and years of
design experience have come together
to create Liebherr's newest ultra-class
mining truck, the T 284. This machine
offers the highest payload in the indus-
try and features the latest generation of
the Litronic Plus AC drive system. Built
with many Liebherr-designed systems
and components, the T 284 serves as
the platform for future advances in mi-
ning truck technology.

The Litronic Plus drive system, develo-
ped and built by Liebherr, determines the
optimal way to extract power from the
diesel engine. Thus more power is availa-
ble to accelerate the truck and climb gra-
des. The system also conserves fuel
when the engine is idling. In this way it
minimizes fuel consumption and maxi-
mizes performance.

er output from 245 hp to 335 hp (180 kW
to 246 kW) and is equipped with a turbo-
charger and charge-air cooler.

Unlike existing models, the new model
series, which is based on the Liebherr
diesel short block engines of emission
level IIIB, features a self-contained sys-
tem. The compressor inlet and turbine
outlet for the gas form the interfaces for
the respective application. The charge-
air cooler, control flap and spark plugs
are therefore already included in the
standard equipment. The customer re-
ceives a ready-to-install, complete and
compact system.

Liebherr’s goal is to use as much of the
truck’s load-carrying capacity as possi-
ble for payload. The T 284 achieves this
by combining its trademark low empty
vehicle weight (EVW) and electric drive
system. The key to this empty vehicle
weight is the durable, lightweight frame
which includes cast components in stra-
tegic areas and hollow box rails with fully
welded internal stiffeners. The low EVW,
the efficient Litronic Plus AC drive sys-
tem and the high-power (up to 4,000 hp /
2, 983 kW) engine enable fast haul cycle
times with higher speeds on grade com-
pared to other trucks in the T 284's class.

Finally, customers that utilize T 284
trucks are able to meet production tar-
gets in less time or with a smaller num-
ber of vehicles.
